The 72-hour rule

How much does your household need?

UK advice is to be able to look after yourselves for at least three days. Here's what that means for your home.

2
1
0
1
27 L

drinking water, about 14 × 2-litre bottles. Double it if you can, for cooking and washing.

27

no-cook meals, plus snacks.

3

days of pet food and water for each pet.

3 litres of water per person per day, three meals a day, for three days. The app keeps these numbers for your household and counts your stores against them.

Proper planning, without the panic.

Grab Bag is made by Fleming & Kin, founded by a UK forces veteran.

In the forces you learn that being ready isn't about kit piled in a cupboard. It's about knowing what you've got, knowing the plan, and making sure everyone knows where to meet. Grab Bag takes those habits and makes them simple for families at home.

No doom and no bunkers. Just UK advice, UK numbers and UK weather, in an app that still works when the signal doesn't.

The first aid and safety content follows NHS, St John Ambulance, Met Office and Environment Agency guidance.

Proper planning prevents poor performance. Every squaddie knows the rest.

Questions

Does it really work with no signal?

Yes. The guides, checklists, first aid cards, stores and plan are all saved on your phone. GPS works without phone signal, so your grid reference and compass work anywhere. Nearby needs signal once to download your area, then works offline.

Is it a replacement for first aid training?

No. Grab Bag is a quick reminder based on NHS and St John Ambulance guidance. A first aid course is the best thing you can do. In an emergency, always call 999.

Is the Full Kit a subscription?

No. It's a single payment of £4.99, and any packs added later are included. You can restore your purchase on a new iPhone at any time.

When is it out, and is there an Android version?

Grab Bag is coming to iPhone first. Android will follow if there's demand. Email us below and we'll let you know when it launches.

Can I trust the wild food section?

Use it to learn, never as the only reason to eat something. Every page shows the features to check and the poisonous lookalikes. If you're not 100% sure, leave it. Grab Bag never helps you pick mushrooms to eat.
